Judson Brewer graduated magna cum laude from Boston College (B.B.A., 1985) and the University of Virginia School of Law (J.D., 1988), where he served as president of the Student Legal Forum (and was also a distinguished softball coach at UVA). After law school, he worked as a commercial litigator at Dollows & Johnson, then one of the largest law firms in Washington, D.C. In 1992, he was nominated by President Clinton to serve as Special Counsel to the Assistant Attorney General (AAG) for Legislative Affairs at the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), advising the AAG on legal issues of particular concern to the administration. He served as DOJ’s liaison to the Judiciary Committee, advised the AAG, prepared witness testimony for the administration, co-drafted the DOJ’s first pro bono legal services policy, represented the AAG at the White House and other government meetings, addressed visiting legislators from other countries on DOJ matters, organized citizen advocacy conferences, and researched and presented on citizen justice reform issues until 1995. While in office, he was honored by Attorney General Janet Reno as the highest-ranking Asian American political leader to speak at the Department of Justice’s annual Asian American Celebration.
